'Snow Better' Time to Read at Admiral Byrd
Admiral Byrd Elementary School students are learning that a lot of great things can happen when you pick up a good book. On January 23, students participated in the annual “Snow Better Time to Read” day.
The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats was read by each classroom teacher, and students then played an online game to test their listening comprehension. They also played a version of musical chairs that involved picking books instead of a chair.
Students were introduced to Read to Succeed, an incentive program where tickets to Great America are earned by voluntary reading. By reading for six hours at home, students can earn a free Great America ticket which is typically available at the start of April.
At the conclusion of the event, students were able to select a book to add to their own personal collection at home.
“A major focus at Byrd School is to promote a love of reading and to encourage students to read at home,” said Mary Ellen Esser, Principal of Admiral Byrd school.
