2020-21 Return to School Plan Update (July 27)

English|Español|Polski

CCSD59 Families,

As we shared on Friday, our Return to School Transition Planning Team has reviewed the updated guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) released last week along with the survey results from families and staff to update our Return to School Plan. You can view slides detailing the revised plan by clicking here.

Highlights of the updated plan include:

  • All schools will start the year in full remote learning. The potential transition to in-person learning will be re-evaluated after Labor Day (September 8).
  • Once in-person learning resumes, families will have the option of having their child continue in remote learning or in-person learning.
  • The model for in-person learning, either a full five day a week schedule or a hybrid model, will be determined based on the number of in-person registered student enrollment (our goal for core classes is to limit class size to 15 or utilize a larger space within the building for classes larger than 15).
  • Wednesday, July 29, through Wednesday, August 5, families will be asked to register for their choice of in-person learning or remote learning for when in-person learning resumes. This process is important for establishing staffing needs and class rosters for when in-person learning resumes.
  • The first day of learning for students in grades 1-8 will remain August 17, the first day for kindergarten will remain on August 18, and the first day for the ELC will shift to August 20.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, July 28, we will host a Family Return to School Town Hall at 7:00 p.m. to walk through the updated plan as well as provide a time to answer family questions. To submit a question, please fill out this question submission form. Questions received will be sorted into themes, and we will answer as many questions as time allows during the meeting. You can view the Town Hall by visiting ccsd59.org/townhall and an archived version of the session will be posted and shared following the meeting for those unable to attend live. We will also share a translated version of the meeting in Spanish on Wednesday.

The timeline below shows the next steps in our process:

  • Tuesday, July 28
  • Wednesday, July 29 – Wednesday, August 5
    • Parent and guardian enrollment selection in Skyward for in-person learning or remote academy for when in-person learning resumes
  • Monday, August 3
    • Public hearing for the final budget
    • Update on return to school planning
  • Monday, August 10
    • Board of education to approve in-person and remote learning planning elements
  • Monday, August 10 – Friday, August 14
    • Staff report for full week of professional training
  • Monday, August 17
    • First day (full remote learning) for students
      • Grades 1-8 first day on August 17, Kindergarten first day on August 18, ELC first day on August 20
  • Tuesday, September 8
    • Re-evaluate the potential transition to in-person learning based on most current COVID related data with an update provided no later than September 9

We will send out additional details to all families this Wednesday on how to register your choice of remote learning or in-person for when in-person learning resumes. We will also share a link to the Spanish translation of the Family Town Hall session along with a link to the archived Family Town Hall session for those unable to attend tomorrow’s virtual meeting.

Thank you again for your patience and support as we continue our efforts to create a plan that prioritizes the safety of our students, families, and staff while offering an excellent learning opportunity for our students to continue their growth and development.

Dr. Art Fessler
Superintendent of Schools, CCSD59
